Throughout 2022 and 2023, we had been warned many times by IRCC that actual processing of Tam’s family’s case and their entry to Canada might take as along as three years. Other sponsorship groups have given similar timelines, especially for refugees who are not in first place in global news headlines.
And in spite of that, very suddenly in mid-October, Tam received very short notice messages from IRCC and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) that the family’s case had been approved and finalized, and flights to Canada booked for October 26th/27th.
The only worry at that point was the potential closure of airports in the Lebanon, with fighting in the Middle East escalating, and Lebanon apparently being drawn in. We literally checked off the days and hours and minutes until everyone was on the plane…
